The starting material is often light gauge steel, and the process proceeds as follows:

- Hot Rolling: The slabs are fed into the hot rolling mill where they pass between preheated (1200 °C to 13000 °C) rolls to form a continuous sheet of steel with a gauge of about 6 to 8 mm thick.
- Pickling: The hot-rolled sheets are cooled. They are then cleaned of any oxide formed during pickling.
- Cold Reduction: Cooling of the hot sheets with water and lubricating oil, and then further rolling.
- Cleaning: Water and the lubricating oil are removed using alkaline phosphates, sodium hydroxide, and silicates. Then hot air is used for the final removal of the cooling liquids.
- Annealing: This process softens the steel to achieve its expected grain structure. Batch annealing creates deep-draw to hardened and stiff steel able to withstand vacuum and pressures.
- Temper Rolling: After annealing the steel, it is rolled to produce sheets of the correct thickness.
- Double Reduction: This is where a second round of reduction is used to roll the steel. The result is thinner and stronger sheets. Double reduced sheets can be as thin as 0.14–0.24 mm.
- Electrotinning: Pure tin is applied to the steel sheets electrolytically. Electrolysis achieves thin tin coatings and controls the thickness of the coat.
- This is critical, as the variance of coating thickness on both sides of the steel sheet can produce ‘differential coated tinplate.’ The tin layer thickness must be at least 0.1 to 3 microns (1/70000th of an inch).
- Plating: In this process, steel sheets pass through plating tanks with electrolytes. 9% pure tin anodes are submerged, fully covered by a layer of tin through electrolysis. The excess tin is removed from the sheet and recycled.
- Flow-melting: This is heating and melting of the tin coating, forming an iron-tin alloy layer. The alloy improves the anti-corrosive properties of tin.
- Passivation: The tin coating is oxidized, forming a thin film. They add a layer of chromium to prevent it from growing. To stabilize the coating, they add a layer of food-grade oil.

What is the Thickness range of the Tinplate Sheet?
Tinplate is a cold-rolled steel sheet metal with a thickness range of 0.13 mm-0.50 mm.
The tin coating is measured in microns–1 micron is equal to 0.0001mm. In a tinplate sheet, steel takes up most thickness.

Is Tinplate Sheet Printing the same as Lacquering?

Lacquering is the application of a thin layer of liquid that forms a protective hard coating.
The inside of a tinplate container can also be lacquered to create an inert protective barrier between the packaging container and the contents.
Internal lacquering should not contaminate the contents inside.
What are the available Tinplate Sheet Sizes in the Market?
Tinplate sheet is available in a wide range of suitable sizes.
The size limits of this material depend on the manufacturer as different manufacturers have different size guides.
In tinplate sheet manufacturing, the strip width is usually the limiting dimension among manufacturers.
However, it ranges from 675mm to 1000mm across the board, about 27 into 40.
Note that an increasing number of manufacturers can now offer tinplate sheets with a strip width of up to 1200 mm.
Cut lengths for these vary from around 460 mm to 1100mm.
Also, note that manufacturers don’t produce all dimensions in all tinplate sheet grades for technical reasons.
Therefore, it is essential to first ask your manufacturer the sizes available before making your tinplate sheets order.
Another thing to consider when ordering tinplate sheet sizes is the grain directionality.
This should be in tandem with what you want to make out of the tinplate.
How do you verify the quality of Tinplate Sheets?
The quality of tinplate sheets is specified in ISO 11949 1995 edition.
To verify the quality of tinplate sheets, you can do a visual inspection. Check sheets for:
- Pinholes and perforations through the thickness of the tinplate sheet material
- Defects of the tinplate surface may make the material unsuitable for use.
- Faults in the shape of sheet and damages which could affect its usability

Form of Tinplate

Type of Steel Base
Again, selection for this is dependent on the end-use.
In recent years, continuously cast steel is more commonly used for tinplate production. Manufacturers believe that this type of steel is more chemically suited for more severe applications.
Formability
The formability of the tinplate sheet imposes specific formulations following the manufacturer’s practice.
Temper Grade
This should be chosen carefully, considering the degree of formability you need along with the reduction type.
Whether the sheet is continuously annealed or batch annealed can have an impact on its performance.
Surface Finish
When you require special decorative effects on the end product, a tinplate sheet with a matt finish is advisable. For general purpose applications such as tin food cans etc., a bright or stone finish is recommended.
Coating
The selection of the type of coating depends on the applications of the tinplate sheet.
Generally, a heavier tin coating offers better protection in more severe corrosive conditions. Differentially coated tinplate is also better suited when the corrosive requirements of either surface of the tinplate sheet vary.
A heavier coating is recommended for the outer surface of the tinplate sheet, or the end product is transported in highly humid and corrosive conditions.
Passivation
