What is Tinplate Coil?

 Tinplate coil

Tinplate coil

Tinplate coil is a type of tinplate wound into a continuous roll for further processing.

Before the roll is formed, it is called a flat-rolled tinplate sheet, and after it is created, it is called a tinplate coil or rolled tinplate sheet.

The thickness of the tinplate coil is not standard. This causes different performances in the same product.

Why buy Tinplate Coil?

Tinplate coil offers the following benefits when used in various applications.

  • It has excellent paintability. Meaning, you can have logos, trademarks and brand your products as decoratively as you wish.
  • The material is non-toxic, tasteless, and odorless, making it suitable for food contact.
  • It has excellent rigidity, which increases its durability. This feature also makes it suitable for high-impact applications.
  • Tinplate coil has good impact resistance, making it ideal for storage and transportation because it cannot break.
  • It is highly recyclable and sustainable, making it suitable for applications with high regard for the environmental conservancy.
  • Its high barrier properties make tinplate coil an ideal material for food cans and chemical containers.
  • Tinplate coil is rust-resistant and hardly affected by cold or heat. This ensures packaged content stays fresh, uncontaminated, and lasts longer. It also delays the wear and tear of tinplate coil products.
  • The material has valuable insulation properties preferable for food contact and beverage applications.
  • Also, the tinplate coil is pretty versatile. You can use it to make several products for different applications.

What are the primary uses of Tinplate Coil?

Tinplate coil is widely used in the packaging industry. The material is used to make tin packaging cans, can ends, tin lids, bottle tops, closures, and boxes for different applications.

The material is also popular in making borehole pipes, mining equipment, wheel rims, gas cylinders, water tanks, and truck trailers.

Apart from these, tinplate coil is commonly used to make domestic equipment and appliances such as refrigerators, electric cookers, etc.

Tinplate coil is also used for office equipment, vehicle manufacturing, among other uses.

Usually, the material comes with different tin coating thicknesses to suit specific requirements.

What is the difference between Tinplate Coil and Tinplate Sheet?

 Tinplate coil vs tinplate sheet

 Tinplate coil vs Tinplate sheet

Difference between tinplate coil and tinplate sheet include;

Quality: Tinplate coil uses one annealing process to make, while tinplate sheet uses at least two annealing processes. This means that the tinplate coil is of higher quality than the tinplate sheet.

Weldability: tinplate coil has better weldability than the tinplate sheet.

Production process: produced by cold-rolled steel, tinplate sheet is steel plate, punched into the required size according to the customer’s requirements.

Tinplate coil is a secondary raw material of tinplate. It is made by rolling tinplate sheet to coil product. It is also the primary product after the tinplate smelting furnace.

The coil is formed into a roll for ease of processing. Tinplate sheet comes in flat sheets which must be cut into different sizes.

Also, applications of tinplate coils and tinplate sheets differ. Tinplate coils are primarily used in the areas where sizeable continuous size is required. They are popularly used in the building industry to make roofs, shingles, large storage tanks, containers, etc.

On the other hand, Tinplate sheet is mainly used in making food and beverage packaging cans, aerosol bottles, and chemical cans, among other uses.

What is Tinplate Coil Material?

Tin plate coil material is composed of a steel base and tin layer as a coat.

  • Composition of Base Substrate-Steel
 C (%)Mn (%)P (%)S (%)Si (%)
TS 2400.80.40.0200.0220.03
TS 2800.40.30.0200.0220.04
TS 240 is excellent for beverage packaging cans, and TS 280 is ideal for food cans.

  • Tin (Sn)

The tin is soft and shiny. It has an oxide film for protection and is corrosion resistant.

Coating the steel with tin prevents rusting on the steel surface and creates an overall corrosion-resistant surface. High resistance to corrosion and temperature change makes it excellent for packaging and food contact purposes.

How is Tinplate Coil Produced?

Tinplate coil goes through several stages.

First, an electrolyte leaning-tinplate is cleaned by electrolysis. Here, the material is soaked in a cleaning solution, usually dilute sulfuric acid, which oxidizes and removes impurities at the anode.

Secondly, the clean substrate undergoes temper rolling. In the process, a hot, soft coil passes between two rollers.

One roller has sharp teeth, and the other roller is smooth. As the coil passes through the nip of the two rollers, its thickness is reduced by one-half.

Thirdly, the material is double reduced. The first roll in the tinplate process is called “reduction roll” because the thickness of the material is reduced to 0.15-0.17mm.

After another roll, double reduction rolling will make the tinplate thickness 0.072-0.10mm or even thinner.

Fourthly, a coating is applied. After the desired thickness is achieved, the steel undergoes electrolytic coating (Tin). Here, molten tin is deposited on the surface of a steel or aluminum substrate after passing through an electrolytic bath.

Fifthly, after the production is complete, the coil moves to the coil inspection line. In this stage, the product is inspected if it meets the requisite quality, performance, and safety standards

What is the Difference between Hot Rolling and Cold Rolling Techniques in Tinplate Coil Production?

Hot rolling vs cold rolling process

Hot rolling vs. cold rolling processes

The difference between hot rolling and cold rolling techniques include:

  • Hot rolling uses high temperature and pressure to deform the material. In contrast, cold rolling uses low temperature and pressure to apply pressure to the metal.
  • Tinplate coil made by the hot rolling turns out thicker while cold rolled tinplate coil comes out thinner and lighter gauge. Each of these is produced to meet different application requirements.
  • When rolling a coil, the hot-rolled coil is finished in a single process. On the other hand, cold-rolled coils are completed in two steps, namely cold-rolling and annealing.
  • Cold-rolled tinplate coil production cost is higher than the hot-rolled coil.
  • Also, the final product surface quality of cold-rolled coils is usually better and with excellent performance.

What is the Chemical Composition of Steel substrate used for Tinplate Coil?

The composition of the steel substrate is mainly carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur. The proportion of each element will affect the physical and mechanical properties of the tinplate coil. Chromium, aluminum, and nitrogen may be added to the substrate to improve its properties.

What are the two critical considerations for choosing Steel Substrate for Tinplate Coil?

The critical considerations for choosing a suitable steel substrate for tinplate coil are:

Grounds of Processing

The steel substrate needs to be suitable with a tinplate production line and good structural stability.  It will either be cold rolled or hot rolled. In rolling, the steel substrate should bear high temperatures above the steel’s recrystallization temperature.

Structural Considerations

The tensile strength and the elongation rate of the steel plate should be within the ranges defined in GB/T10654-2008. The yield strength should be equal to or greater than 350MPa.

Choose a steel substrate based on the application as it will determine the mechanical properties and performance of the end product.

What is Electrolytically Coated Tinplate Coil?

Electrolytically coated tinplate coil is a cold-rolled steel plate with a tin coating applied by electrolytic deposition.

The steel plate is produced by a continuous annealing process and then flow melted in an electrolytic tank. The molten tin adheres to the steel surface’s free tin layer, creating a thin, well-bonded, and lustrous protective finish.

What is the difference between Batch Annealing and Continuous Annealing for Tinplate Coil?

Annealing aims to soften the tinplate and remove any internal stresses that may cause brittleness or cracks during further processing.

Continuous annealing is done by passing the tinplate coil continuously through heaters. On the other hand, batch annealing requires that the coil be stopped and baked individually.

The advantage of continuous annealing over batch annealing is that it allows more uniform heating and cooling conditions. CA allows for better control of final properties.

In continuous annealing, the substrate steel is uncoiled for treatment and recoiled. Batch annealing heats the coil unwound in a small mobile furnace. The latter takes a longer time, usually three days, to complete.

What are the available sizes of Tinplate Coil?

Tinplate coil is available in three main sizes:

Single Reduced Tinplate Coil

For this, hot rolled steel coils are first cold-rolled and annealed. It then goes through temper rolling and tin-coating through an electrolytic process.

The resulting tinplate coil has a varying thickness, hardness and may be differentially coated using the IS 1993/ISO 11949 standards.

Double Reduced Tinplate Coil

The double reduced tinplate coil is more robust and thinner compared to single reduced coils.

During its production, the steel substrate is electrolytically tin coated. It is again cold reduced, annealed and subjected to a second cold rolling, and then lubricated. This process of double rolling improves the coil’s mechanical properties.

Coils produced by the double reducing method have a thickness range between 0.14mm to 0.21mm.

Soft Double Reduced Tinplate Coil

The second cold rolling for soft double reduced tinplate coil is lower than standard Double Reduced coils. Soft DR has a hardness of 65 with a dimensional tolerance of +4 -3. Its thickness range is 0.18 to 0.23mm with a bright finish and lighter than single reduced ETP.

What is Mechanical Test for Tinplate Coil, and why is it important?

Mechanical Test is a series of test methods used to evaluate the mechanical properties of tinplate coil.

These tests are used to evaluate the quality of the tinplate coil. They can indicate whether the quality of the final product will be good or bad.

The following tests are applied to tinplate coils:

  • Dimensional accuracy test
  • The thickness of the tinplate coil
  • Defects
  • Tensile strength (tensile test, impact test, bend test)
  • Elongation at break

How does the Tensile Test for Tinplate Coil compare with the Rockwell Hardness Test?

The tensile test is a process of measuring the strength of a material by testing how far it stretches before breaking. It is performed on an instrument called a tensile testing machine.

Rockwell hardness testing, also known as the Rockwell scale or the Rockwell test is a measurement used to gauge the hardness of materials. The higher the number, the more complex and brittle the material is.

How much is Tinplate Coil Price?

Tinplate coil price range is between $600-1100 with a MOQ of 25 tons. This will depend on:

  • Material: MR, SPCC, SPHL
  • Thickness: 0.12-0.5mm (Tolerance -/+0.005mm)
  • Width: 600-1200mm (Tolerance -/+0.2mm)
  • Sheet Length: 600-1200mm (Tolerance -/+0.2mm)
  • Tin Coating: 2.0/2.0, 2.0/2.8, 2.8/2.8, 2.8/5.6 Hardness: T2-T5, DR8, DR9
  • Annealing: BA (Batch annealing) and C A(Continuous annealing)

How does Printing vs. Silk-screening compare for Tinplate Coil?

Printing and silk-screening are both popular methods for decorating tinplate coil. Prints can be in full color and add a 3D feel to the product, as they are applied directly to the flat surface of the material.

Silk-screening offers a wide range of colors and finishes and is suitable for long runs because it doesn’t require plates or film.

Tinplate coils can also have digital images screen-printed on them using UV technology; this gives an opaque appearance durable if the metal is applied over it during heat tempering.

Silk-screened coils are cheaper than printed ones, but they can be more challenging to work with and have a higher chance of production errors.

In contrast, printed coils are more precise but can cost a bit more. If you’re not sure which type of coil to choose, talk to your supplier about your options!

Note that these methods are chosen based on the type of surface being printed, applications of the tinplate coil.

What is Grain Orientation in relation to Tinplate Coil?

Grain orientation is the direction of the grains in the metal. It is described as the direction of rolling, horizontal, vertical, or diagonal.

The grain orientation mainly affects product appearance and mechanical property.

Products with horizontal lines on the surface generally have better toughness during cold rolling and mechanical properties. Products with vertical aluminum lines have better hot bending performance than those without it.

What are the two Modes of Curvature available for Tinplate Coil?

They are:

Longitudinal Bow-line Bow

This curvature model is created by applying compressive force in one direction only. Coils in this curvature can be straightened back to their original shape when the pressure is removed. It shows itself as a gentle curve at both sides of the strip but becomes smaller as it goes to the ends.

The whole surface of the steel coil has a slight curve, but it is not continuous throughout, and there are flat areas in between. The curved part is called a “bend,” and at this time, it is called a “longitudinal bow” or a “longitudinal bend.”

Transverse Bow-cross Bow

The tinplate coil also comes in the traverse/cross-bow form. The transverse bow is the curve convex in the transversal direction of the tinplate (the longitudinal direction of the roll). The cross-bow is the curve convex in the longitudinal direction of the roll.

Curvature is a measure of radius or diameter. It can be used to describe how a circle is bent or curved. The larger the curvature, radius, or diameter, it will be more economical to transport goods by reducing material costs.

From the perspective of this tinplate coil, the shape of the tinplate mold is a great circle arc bending into four parts. The transverse bow is the middle part of the arc, and it has two branches.

The Tinplate industry mainly uses the transverse bow-crossbow mode of curvature to describe the shape of tinplate mold. The bending angle from both ends to the center is called cross-bow.  It includes all kinds of bows across and around.

What is the Recommended Rolling Width for Tinplate Coil?

The table below shows the recommended rolling width for tinplate coil:

Specification (Coil)Recommended Thickness(mm)Recommended Width (mm)
TS 250 and TS 2750.21 – 0.45650 – 950
TH 415 and TH 4250.21 – 0.36690 – 915
Diameter (inside) 420 mm +0 – 6 mm

Dimensional tolerance deviation -not exceeding -0 +3mm for side-trimmed material and +15 to +30mm for untrimmed (edges) material.  Prime material will have tolerance deviations of +15mm.

What are the factors that may affect the Fabrication Capabilities of Tinplate Coil?

The fabrication capabilities of tinplate coil are affected by the following two major factors:

The Structure of the Product

The heavier the gauge (thickness), the more difficult it becomes to fabricate by conventional processes such as folding or drawing.

The End use of the Product

Different applications of tinplate require different degrees of hardness for the base material. The desired hardness is established in a temper rolling mill/double cold rolling mill.

The doubly reduced (DR) temper is produced to obtain extremely high yield strength tinplate. Such tinplate enables the can-maker to create thinner gauge and lighter cans without compromising strength.

Which Fabrication Techniques can I use for Tinplate Coil?

Tinplate coil can be cut, welded, and/or machined to make end products such as tin cans, tin lids, can ends, etc.

You can also bend, draw or even stretch the material for easy processing.

What is the Edge Camber of Tinplate Coils?

The edge camber of tinplate coils refers to the degree of camber on the edge of a flat tinplate sheet.

The edge camber of tinplate coils is usually measured by drawing a line from the centerline to one end of the plate and extending another line along the edge. The angle formed is called “edge camber angle,” which is measured by using trigonometry.

Camber is expressed in percentage and calculated using the following formula:

Deviation =

Which is the best Surface Finish Option for Tinplate Coil?

The characteristics of a steel base and tin coating conditions determine the appearance of the tinplate coil surface.

You can get tinplate coils in the following finishing options:

Matte Finish

Matte finish is achieved by exposing and etching the surface of the tinplate by electroplating to oxidize the exposed patterned areas. This creates dark spots on the light background.

Tinplate with a matte finish is excellent for printed beer or soft drink cans. Matte finish has a roughness of 0.80 – 1.20 Ra (µm).

Silver Finish

A silver finish on the tinplate is obtained by electrolytically cathodic deposition. This is a technique in which thin layers of silver are deposited onto the surface of a metal. Silver has a roughness of 0.80 – 1.20 Ra (µm).

The silver finish is beautiful when printed or lacquered. It makes quality and great-looking gift boxes, screw caps, and tea sets.

Stone Finish

The stone finish helps by adding weight and strength to the tinplate. It provides an aesthetic quality that sets it apart from other metal products. It has a roughness of 0.35 – 0.60 Ra (µm).

A stone finish is best suited for food containers and trays as it’s resistant to scratching.

Bright Finish

Tin and oxygen react together to produce insoluble stannate, which is the cause of the brightness in the bright tinplate surface finish. Bright finish tinplate coil can be used to make food cans, container tanks, water pipes, and vehicle panels.

How is Tin Coating Thickness determined for Tinplate Coil?

The coating thickness on tinplate coils is determined by: a) the end-use and b) the environment it will be exposed to. It is essential to notify the producer of the intended use of the template coil so that you can get the best quality for your help.

Note that the tinplate coil is either equally coated or differentially coated. Equally coated means that both faces of steel have an equal thickness of tin coat. Differentially coated implies that one side of steel is coated with a thinner layer or has no coating.

Coating specifications are usually as follows:

Equal coating thickness:

What is Passivation Treatment, and why is it applied to Tinplate Coil?

Tin tends to form an oxide layer on its surface that can cause discoloration and corrosion when in contact with foods or drinks.

Passivation is the process of adding an oxide layer to metal to protect it against corrosion. Tinplate is passivated with a thin film of aluminum oxide (AlO). Tinplate must be passivated during manufacture before it is coated and filled.

There are two types of passivation available;

  • Passivation code 300: This coating is for DWI cans (beverage). Tinplate coil is treated with sodium dichromate in chromium with 3mg/m2 per surface range.
  • Passivation code 311: This coating is for DWI cans (food). Tinplate coil is treated with cathodic sodium dichromate in chromium with a range of 4-9mg/m2 per surface.

Is oiling necessary for Tinplate Coil?

Yes.

Oiling protects the tinplate coil from scratch. Dioctyl Sebacate (DOS) oil of between 2.0 -6.0mg/m2 is applied on each side of the coil. It is difficult to determine the thickness of the oil layer after 24 hours since oil is naturally unstable and reacts with tin coating.

What is SITA (Systeme Internationale Tinplate Area) in relation to Tinplate Coil?

SITA is a linear measurement system for coils of metal strip to facilitate their international sale and transport. It also minimizes the risk of disputes.

Tinplate coil is availed in SITA (Systeme Internationale Tinplate Area). One SITA equals  100 m2 of the coil.

Formula:

Apart from SITA, which other supply conditions apply to Tinplate Coil?

Other supply conditions that apply to tinplate coil include;

Mass

Tinplate coil is available in terms of Price List 155. Our General Terms and Conditions of Sale apply.

Lap Welds

The presence of lap welds is to maintain a maximum mass of coil. This is because, during coil manufacturing, cuts and joints are unavoidable. The lap welds are marked by punching a 15mm to 50mm whole to a max of 2 lap welds /coil.

Inner and Outer Wraps

There is no guarantee of the absence of mechanical damage inside and outside of wraps at a 10m distance from each end.

Which is better between Standard Grade and Second Grade Tinplate Coil?

Standard-grade tinplate is better than second-grade tinplate coil. Standard grade tinplate coil is void of the following

  • Perforations and holes within the entire coil
  • Thickness outside the standard tolerance range
  • No material defects could affect the quality of the products
  • Coil shape damage or any other defects that could affect the quality of the products.

Second grade is selected from the best rejects of first grade. It could have perforations, material damage, defects, and lacquer quality, and paint on the material surface is not guaranteed.
